A new trade ambassador has been appointed to promote Chinese investment in the UK.

Helen Wang will take on the new role to raise the profile of the West Midlands’ automotive, ICT, environmental and business support service sectors for Chinese companies looking to expand their global operations.

Ms Wang has been appointed by overseas investment body Heart of England Region, a specialist arm of regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands (AWM), with the sole aim of generating investment in the region’s industrial sectors.

Ms Wang will champion the industrial capabilities of the West Midlands to Chinese investors as well as cultivating existing relationships that have already been forged between the two nations.

Tom Marchbanks, AWM’s International Investment Manager, said: “Our representation is timely as Chinese companies increasingly look to internationalise.

“With World Expo being held in Shanghai this year, the first time in a developing market, our representation is especially important to enable the region access to China’s key corporate decision makers.

“And of course, this new representation will make it easier to continue to develop the region’s existing good relationship with Shandong province.”

Ms Wang’s presence in Shanghai will also provide a direct link for regional firms to establish export ties with China and allow them to take advantage of emerging markets.

Innovation in low carbon technologies and developments within the waste management sector will also be showcased by Ms Wang as part of a drive to bolster the global profile of the region’s dedication to a low carbon future.
