The North East’s reputation as a leader in research and development has been reinforced with a new £10.2 million ($15m) contract to supply engine technology.

Manufacturer Comesys Europe, which is based in Cramlington, has secured a deal with Chinese manufacturer Yangzhou Yaxing Motor Coach to supply between 2,500 and 3,000 of its Mini Hybrid TK systems.

The systems will be fitted to hundreds of eco-friendly buses, which are to be made in Nanjing City, over the next five years.

The unique electronic technology improves the cooling system of bus engines resulting in a 10% fuel saving and 10% less carbon emissions.

Comesys has been developing the technology over the last two years and has successfully trialled the engines in the North East.

He added that the new contract opens the door to more deals in the “lucrative” Chinese market, which should lead to more business opportunities overseas.

Comesys, which was formed four years ago and has 13 staff, received £15,000 from One North East’s Low Carbon Transport Strategy to help support the project’s development.

The company is now looking to double its workforce to cope with the anticipated growth.
