The East of England should form a partnership between stakeholders to ensure it benefits from the eventual economic upswing.
Speaking at a debate organised by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), Steve Sharratt, Chair of the Confederation of British Industry Eastern Region, called for companies, politicians and the public to work together.
He also said that the current economic crisis can be used to establish a sense of direction and purpose for the region, which can create a "thriving environment" and in turn attract businesses and residents.

Richard Ellis, Chair of the EEDA, also pointed out that the area has growing renewable energy and green industries, access to international markets through airports and docks, and established food and farming sectors to drive its success.
He added: "Our region has one of the fastest growing populations and economies in the UK and is home to world-class research institutes, universities and companies.

Mr Ellis also revealed that the development agency is working with local partners to channel funding into skills, training and infrastructure, which will prepare the area for the eventual upturn.
The recent Innovation Insight: The Innovation Performance of the East of England report claimed that the region performs better than any other area in the UK when it comes to cutting-edge business activity.
