The PHDs will examine Scotland's £3.5 billion chemical industry to identify opportunities and challenges which may arise in the future, with a total of £1.8 million being invested over three years by the SFC and the universities of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Dundee and Aberdeen.

Dr Sandy Dobbie, Chairman of CSS, said: "By encouraging our research base to focus on industry issues and opportunities, we can improve our global competitiveness and develop new technologies that can be exploited by companies operating from Scotland.

The programme will see links formed between universities and the chemicals industry, with it intended to allow future collaborations and help meet the Scottish government's aim of creating sustainable economic growth.

According to CSS, the Scottish chemical industry is the country's second biggest export earner, with shipping revenues of around £1.8 billion, and accounts for 10.5 per cent of Scottish manufacturing turnover.
