Thames Gateway investment plan revealed

An investment plan to regenerate the Thames Gateway has been announced by the three regional development agencies in the south-east.

The London Development Agency, East of England Development Agency and South East England Development Agency intend the new Economic Development Investment Plan to transform the region into a business, research and innovation hub.

Working with the Department for Communities and Local Government, the plan has 30 areas of investment, including setting up a new joint inward investment service to create more high-value jobs and skills opportunities in the area.

In addition, funding will be channelled towards environmental research and development, with centres established at Dagenham Dock, Dartford in Kent and south Essex to examine waste recycling, low-impact buildings and bio-energy technologies.

Caroline Flint, housing minister, said: "The Economic Development Investment Plan will enable the delivery of a knowledge-driven, well connected, globally competitive region. It also demonstrates how economic growth and environmental sustainability can work together.

Earlier this year, the London Development Agency announced that the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings has opened at London South Bank University, to look at ways of developing sustainable energy technology and building design.
