Dairy research centre to open

A new centre of excellence will support the dairy industry, with research into cattle health and welfare.

The Dairy Centre, a collaboration between supermarket giant Tesco and the University of Liverpool, will be based at Wood Park Dairy Farm on the university's veterinary campus.

The centre’s aim is to improve the commercial benefits of farming. It will conduct research into issues such as cattle fertility, lameness and calf health and will allow future vets at the university to learn about dairy technologies and farm management.

This collaboration will provide better communication and understanding between producers and retailers.

John Cameron, Wood Park farm manager, commented: "This collaboration will provide better communication and understanding between producers and retailers.

"Wood Park will test new ideas and systems of operation so that we are in a better position to advise other farmers on developments in the industry.

Emma Rutter, Tesco dairy agricultural manager, said the collaboration with the university will give the firm access to some of the UK's top dairy specialists.

Wood Park Dairy Farm houses 200 cows, producing around 9,500 litres of milk a year.

Last week, Dairy UK chairman Mark Allen said sustainability is one of the key issues facing the sector and urged more promotion be done to show improvements which have been made.
