Speaking at the 4M Network Conference in Cardiff, Rhodri Morgan told international scientists that Wales has some of the facilities need to lead advances in the field.
The Minister predicted the nanotechnology sector to be worth $1 trillion (£567 billion) within a decade and claimed the rise of the science could be the new industrial revolution.
Mr Morgan told the delegates: "Nanotechnology once only existed in the science fiction worlds of Doctor Who and Star Trek - but the reality is that it is with us today and dramatically re-shaping our world.

Wales is home to three of the UK's leading research and development facilities - the UK Laser Micromachining Centre at Bangor University, MicroBridge at Cardiff's MEC and Cardiff University's metalFAB.
The UK Laser Micromachining Centre was opened 2005 and provides commercial laser micromachining service to industry and research, in sectors such as biotechnology, photonics and energy.
