'Bright future' for Scottish textiles

Jim Mather visited the Western Isles to tour Harris Tweed mills and discuss ways to increase sustainable elements in the field.

Describing the textile as a "unique and iconic product" of Scotland, Mr Mather applauded the isles for their commitment to creating a sustainable future and noted the investment Harris Tweed firms have made over recent years.

He also claimed the Government will promote ideal business conditions for the industry and pointed to the support it will receive from the Association of Harris Tweed Weavers and the Harris Tweed Liaison industry group.

Mr Mather concluded: "I have seen today a huge amount of energy, innovation, investment and collaboration to keep Harris Tweed a successful global brand.

Harris Tweed Liaison was formed to discuss and collaborate on issues facing the industry and looks at concerns over promotion, distribution and skills development.
