£20m boost for manufacturing research

The Government is to channel £20 million in the UK's manufacturing industry to encourage innovation in the sector.

According to the Technology Strategy Board, the investment aims to support research and development of new products and technologies which will improve the UK's international competitiveness.

Ian Pearson, Science and Innovation Minister, described manufacturing as a "vital" industry for the UK, providing more than half of the country's exports and making Britain the world's sixth largest manufacturer.

He also claimed the investment, which comes from the Technology Strategy Board and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, will maintain the quality of sectors such as aerospace, healthcare and recycling.

"These successful projects reflect the changing nature of manufacturing and we are investing in the UK to enable it to maintain its place as one of the world's leading manufacturing locations," he explained.
