The Technology Strategy Board and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will channel the funding into 16 research projects working on solutions to energy generation, transmission, storage and conservation issues.
Ian Pearson, science and innovation minister, said creating a sustainable energy supply is one of the major challenges facing the UK and the investment will further the development of innovative materials to meet this.

Among the technologies being explored are bio-based insulation which is energy efficient, new materials for use in tidal turbines and double-glazed windows which include photovoltaic cells.
David Bott, the board's director of innovation programmes, commented: "Through this support, the Technology Strategy Board is helping to bring together the UK's world class expertise to research and develop innovative technologies in a key area for the UK.
Earlier this year, the Technology Strategy Board awarded £4 million in a project to carry collaborative research into new materials for zero-carbon buildings.
