John Hutton, the Business Secretary, revealed the forthcoming National Nuclear Laboratory intends to become a global centre for research in nuclear energy development and how to deal with waste created by the technology.

He also announced a competition will be held to find a commercial organisation to run the laboratory, while industry is also invited to submit proposals for the UK's next generation of nuclear power plants.
The National Nuclear Laboratory will undertake research to use on the domestic and international markets, with some operations based at the Sellafield Technology Centre.
Mr Hutton commented: "It is now clear nuclear power will need to continue to play a crucial role in our low-carbon future.
"I am determined the UK makes the most of its unrivalled nuclear skills base" he added.

The Minister was speaking at the Sellafield power station to announce a £2-billion regeneration initiative to increase west Cumbria's nuclear sector.
According to the Nuclear Industry Association, earlier this year Mr Hutton told Unite that nuclear power, deployed alongside renewable sources, is a "significant opportunity" to change the UK's energy sector.
