The plant in Huyton, which was developed by the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA), will convert household and commercial waste in a fuel to be used in renewable energy generation.

We hope this facility will prove itself as a modern solution to waste management over the next few years

Fuel created at the plant will be used in biomass power plants, while materials recovered from the waste will be recycled for other uses.
Carl Beer, MWDA Director, revealed that the Merseyside area produces around 700,000 tonnes of waste each year, which could be used as a "valuable resource".
Kevin Cluskey, Local Councillor, commented: "We hope this facility will prove itself as a modern solution to waste management over the next few years.
"It is the unique thinking behind the technology which could help Merseyside to tackle its waste mountain.

Additionally, the plant includes a visitor centre to increase awareness of renewable energy and waste management.
Earlier this month, the Ross-shire Journal reported that a £47million waste-to-energy incinerator will be built in Invergordon, which will burn 200 tonnes of non-recyclable rubbish a day to generate electricity.
