Owlstone Nanotech will develop a miniature chemical detector for Selex Galileo, a defence and aerospace organisation which supplies worldwide governments, according to BusinessWeekly.co.uk.
The detector will be sold for use in homeland security, defence and anti-terrorism roles. It is the third order Owlstone will deliver for the organisation.
The device will incorporate Owlstone's cutting-edge silicon sensor which can detect minute quantities of airborne or dissolved chemicals - its main use will be to discover explosives.
UK’s strength in nanotech
Bret Bader, chief executive officer of the firm, told BusinessWeekly.com: "This follow-on order will serve to accelerate our efforts toward commercialisation and further solidifies our collaboration with this established partner as we address the burgeoning opportunities for the Owlstone sensor in the homeland defence and military markets.
Using nanotechnology, Owlstone claims to have developed a chemical detector which is 100 times smaller than current systems and can be used across a range of sectors, including healthcare, automotive and defence.
Two years ago, the firm won the innovation category in Business Weekly's East of England Business Awards.
