The university was applauded at a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) event which recognised the contribution that bioscience research has made to the UK economy.
Speaking at the Bioscience: Biomillions event, Steve Visscher, BBSRC interim Chief Executive, noted how bioscience has spurred developments in the agriculture, pharmaceuticals, food, healthcare and environmental sector.
Ian Pearson, the Minister of State for Science and Innovation, commented: "Bioscience researchers in the UK have not only pursued excellent, world-class research, but they have also been active in ensuring that we all benefit from their efforts.

Other scientists who were named include University of Birmingham's Professor Peter Fryer for his work into chemical engineering in food manufacture and Professor Kevin Shakesheff of University of Nottingham, whose research focuses on the regeneration of organs and tissue.

Among the Cambridge scientists who were honoured are Professor Athene Donald for her work on the micro-structure of food and Professors Sir Tom Blundell and Chris Abell's research into pharmaceuticals.
