Computer games support at University of Abertay, Dundee

The University of Abertay, Dundee, has officially opened a unique learning and knowledge-creation area called the White Space.

As a £2.5 million development in the university's computer games technology and computer arts department, the White Space, provides an environment where the skills of the department's students, PhD researchers and lecturers can be mixed with business people, artists and broadcasters.

The new facility is also home to part of BBC Innovation and the planning group for Creative Scotland, in addition to housing Abertay's own White Space Solutions company, which provides technology business ideas to local firms.

Professor Bernard King, Abertay's Principal, said that the White Space will give graduates from the university an advantage in the workplace.

"Our aim is to produce the graduates and the creative and innovative ideas and intellectual property that Scotland needs to enable it to compete in the global knowledge economy," he commented.

Noting that Scotland is already a market leader in the computer games sector, First Minister Alex Salmond said that the White Space would become a "hub of creative and commercial activity".

According to scotland.org, Dundee's computer game industry employs around 450 people, while Scotland's game development sector has worked on top titles such as Grand Theft Auto III, RollerCoaster Tycoon and State of Emergency.
