UK to build world's largest wind farm

Renewable energy firm Airtricity has announced it will begin construction of the world's largest wind farm.

Work on the 504-megawatt Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm will begin shortly and will see the development of two offshore areas, 25 kilometres off the Sussex coast.

The massive potential of the UK shoreline coupled with the right market conditions mean the UK is one of the most attractive places in the world to invest in offshore technology.

Business Secretary

The project, which is a joint venture between Airtricity and Fluor Limited, will require around £1.3 billion in investment.

John Hutton, Business Secretary, noted that the development was an example of the increasing use of offshore renewable energy in the UK.

"The massive potential of the UK shoreline coupled with the right market conditions mean the UK is one of the most attractive places in the world to invest in offshore technology" Hutton commented.

Mr Hutton also revealed that the Energy Bill proposes to provide more support to such projects.

Earlier this week, the Scottish government gave the go ahead for Airtricity to erect ten turbines near Ashkirk, in a project that will generate enough electricity to power 12,000 homes.
