Within seven years the UK railway network will have the ability to carry an extra 180 million passengers.
The plans were set out in a UK government White Paper on the future of rail travel, published this week.
London upgrades
The plans include upgrades and refurbishments at more than 150 stations across the UK.
London Bridge and Blackfriars stations will be upgraded by 2015 and 2011 respectively.
A £5.5 billion modernisation programme for London’s Thameslink service has also been approved, trebling the number of stations served by its cross-London network.
Overhaul for Reading and Birmingham
Congestion at the busy thoroughfare of Reading Station will be eased with £425m of improvements.
And at Birmingham’s New Street Station, £128m has been set aside for redevelopment.
