Construction of Eisai’s new European Knowledge Centre begins at its Hatfield site, north of London, this month.
Announced in January 2006, the new centre will form Eisai’s European headquarters, consolidating drug discovery, production, clinical research and marketing operations for the region.
New manufacturing boost
The firm has just announced the creation of a new manufacturing subsidiary, Eisai Manufacturing Ltd, at the Hatfield site.
Eisai may start manufacturing drugs such as Aricept and Aciphex for stomach ulcers in the UK as early as next year said Yutaka Tsuchiya, head of the company's European business.
The firm is also carrying out clinical trials for cancer treatments in the UK.
Attracted by scientific expertise
When the European Knowledge Centre was first announced in 2006, Eisai’s president Haruo Naito said the UK’s scientific expertise attracted the firm to the UK over other locations.
“The UK has an excellent reputation for scientific innovation, especially in the area of life sciences,” he commented.
