Mr Ghosn received the honour in recognition of his major contribution to the strengthening of industrial ties between Japan and the United Kingdom.
Under Mr Ghosn’s leadership, Nissan has made large re-investments in its car assembly plant in Sunderland, the largest UK car factory and the most productive in Europe, boosting production and employment.
Mr Ghosn has also presided over a strengthening of the company’s commitment to its UK research, development and design operations, doubling employment at its Cranfield technical centre to nearly 1000, and consolidating Nissan Design Europe’s operations into a striking new design centre in West London.
Mr Ghosn has reinvigorated Nissan’s support for the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at Oxford University, providing for the number of doctorates to be doubled and cementing its reputation as one of the world’s top centres for the study of modern Japan.
