DHL has signed a deal with the UK’s Department of Health to supply everything from food, bed linen and medical equipment to UK hospitals.
The German company will run a support organisation for the National Health Service (NHS), called NHS Logistics.
Over 10 years, DHL will manage £22 billion of spending, earning £1.6 billion in revenue.
Strategic sourcing deal
John Pattullo, chief operating officer for DHL Exel Supply Chain, described the contract as “a unique opportunity to deliver innovative, high quality products to support public health in England.”
“This is exactly the kind of strategic sourcing deal where we think we can generate major value for our customers, in this case - the NHS,” he said.
DHL expects to save the NHS £1 billion over the duration of the contract.
New depots planned
DHL will open a new UK-based distribution centre in 2008 to act as a stockholding hub for health service supplies.
Another depot is expected to follow in 2012.
World-class supply chain
Texas-based partner Novation will assist DHL in the running of NHS Logistics.
The contract represents “world-class best practice”, Allan Waller, president of the Chartered Institute of Logistics, told the Financial Times.
