NHS Connecting for Health (CfH) is undertaking a pilot to test and develop an IT specification for blood tracking that will employ RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.
The new system aim to make it easier to trace blood and cut down on mistakes such as giving patients the wrong type of blood.
Commitment to RFID
The UK’s national health service (NHS) is committed to researching and developing RFID technologies to improve patient safety.
RFID is currently being researched as part of a two-year, £80 million study into developing an infrastructure to allow more patients to be treated at home.
Leap forward for industry
The adoption of RFID by an organisation as large as the NHS could be a massive leap for the electronics industry, helping to spur on research and demonstrate the business case for such technology.
The blood tracking pilot is due to commence in early 2007.
