Hutchison Ports (UK) a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings, are to reconfigure the southern part of the Port of Felixstowe, the UK’s largest container port.
The new facility will be developed to handle the very largest container ships.
Transport to the UK made easier
The development will see the conversion of the original dock basin and the existing Landguard Terminal into a new, deep-sea container terminal.
Previously these ships have had to dock on the European Continent, with freight being loaded onto smaller vessels to reach the UK.
“This decision is good news for shipping lines and UK importers and exporters, who can now be confident that extra capacity will be brought on stream as soon as possible,” commented Chris Lewis Hutchison Ports CEO (UK).
It will also lead to improved road and rail connections in the area.
Further plans in the East
Hutchison are also waiting on approval to build a deep-sea container port at Bathside Bay.
The port will consist of 1400m of continuous quay to facilitate the largest deep-sea vessels and will be located on 274 acres of land adjacent to Harwich International.
“There is a substantial and very obvious need for further UK port capacity to cope with the ever-increasing volumes of international trade,” added Chris Lewis, CEO of Hutchison Ports (UK).
