The East of England spends three times the national average on commercial R&D and has the UK’s largest concentration of R&D engineers per capital.
The region is home to seven universities including the University of Cambridge – ranked second university in the world according to the The Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Times Educational Supplement.
Cambridge alone is home to 185 biotech companies and a quarter of Europe’s publicly-quoted biotechs. Norwich is home to the largest concentration of plant, food and microbial scientists in Europe.

Household names such as Hitachi, Microsoft and Toshiba are at the heart of the technology cluster here. Microsoft invested US$100 million in its Cambridge R&D lab – the first outside the US.
The region is home to a cluster of environmental services companies with 290 such organisations concentrated in Peterborough. R&D supporting the sector in the region includes work at the University of East Anglia’s five star rated School of Environmental Sciences and Cranfield University’s Waste Management Centre.
The East of England is home to Europe’s fastest growing airport. Together with Luton Airport, it also serves all main European cities. Norwich Airport offers daily flights to Schiphol, Amsterdam, the heart of a global distribution network. East of England ports include Felixstowe, the UK’s largest container port.

The East of England offers a wide range of schools including state and independent, Steiner, Montessori and international schools.
The region benefits from some excellent hospitals. The Dr Foster report has recently rated Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as having amongst the best survival rates in the country.
The region is home to high-profile cultural events such as the internationally-famous Aldeburgh Festival, and also offers a wide range of leisure options, from watching the horseracing at Newmarket, to dining at top-quality restaurants, including Delia’s Restaurant and Bar, owned by celebrity chef, Delia Smith.
The region is immediately north of London, providing a base within easy reach of the capital, without the associated costs. Quality of life is excellent, with a choice of locating in historic cities or picturesque countryside, either inland or by the sea.
