Moreover, 45 per cent of new biotechnology drugs in late-stage clinical trials (Phase III) in Europe are from the UK.
The UK is also the world’s number-two pharmaceuticals exporter and, with R&D investment of over £3.3 billion in 2005, it ranks with the USA and Japan as one of the top three centres for pharmaceutical research.
